PGA Tour Prepares for Tiger's Return

Filed under:

Tiger Woods
As you might expect, Tiger Woods' eventual return to competitive golf is being eagerly awaited by pretty much everyone at PGA Tour headquarters.

Absolutely and positively there is no one in the golf organization's offices at Ponta Vedra Beach, Fla., who does not want their lead dog back playing for every reason you would expect.

Plus one more.

Can we, please, hurry up and get this over with?

While everyone is careful to the extreme to politely suggest Woods should take all the time he needs to reassemble his personal life before returning to competition, there's no denying that the longer he takes the bigger the task of his arrival becomes.

And despite recent news that Woods returned home to Orlando following a week of family counseling and is preparing to resume golf and fitness routines, there has been no indication of a target date for a initial tournament appearance.

Beyond the golfer's open-ended statement made Feb. 19 during his first public appearance since being engulfed by scandal three months earlier -- "I do plan to return to golf one day, I just don't know when that day will be. I don't rule out that it will be this year." -- there is nothing to suggest when and where he might reappear.

Villegas' Week: From Marathon to Magic

Filed under:

Camilo VillegasCamilo Villegas' Sunday afternoon at the Honda Classic, the first week of the PGA Tour's annual Florida Swing, was so much more than your garden variety five-shot victory and third career win for the 28-year-old native of Medellin, Colombia: It was Take Your Country To Work Day.

What a scrapbook week it turned into for Villegas, who became a one-man Colombian golf embassy on the way to storming the difficult PGA National course with a closing 68 and 13-under total that left runner-up Anthony Kim in the jet wash.

Kim shot 67 to finish 8 under, while Justin Rose posted 64, the day's low round by three shots, to finish third at 7 under. Paul Casey (67) and Vijay Singh (72) tied for fourth, seven shots back.

"Man, it's been a week," Villegas said. "I wanted to play good for all of the people that came out and watched me. I have a lot of people that really care for me in this area. I want to play good for my country and that's exactly what I did. I kept my composure. I hit good shots."

In his fifth PGA Tour season after arriving at the University of Florida in 2001 barely able to speak English, Villegas is everything that will help golf grow in new markets.

Chi Chi Rodriguez: Puerto Rico’s Golf Ambassador
ARMCHAIR GOLF is in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico, for the Puerto Rico Open.

IF YOU CAREFULLY SCANNED PGA TOUR scores from the early 1960s, you could spot one of the very few Hispanic names: Juan Rodriguez. (Another would be Roberto de Vicenzo, the great Argentine player.) I’m not sure when Juan became popularly known as “Chi Chi,” but that young man from humble beginnings in Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico, would become an accomplished and colorful player on the PGA Tour and ambassador for his small island nation.

Chi Chi won eight times on the PGA Tour and notched 22 victories on the Champions Tour. His first title came at the 1963 Denver Open when he was 28 years old. One of my most vivid memories of Rodriguez was watching him duel Jack Nicklaus in an 18-hole playoff at the 1991 Senior U.S. Open at Oakland Hills. Jack won with a 65; Chi Chi shot a very respectable 69. Rodriguez was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1992.

I doubt if there’s a day that goes by that he doesn’t consider himself extremely fortunate. Golf provided a path for Rodriguez that he could have never imagined as a boy who fashioned a makeshift golf club from the branch of a guava tree.

“It means everything to me,” Chi Chi told PGA Tour.com a year ago. “Through golf I made everything I have in life.”

Rodriguez has long been known for his flair, including his trademark Panama hat, rainbow attire and sword antics with his putter when his golf ball dropped into the cup. Many know of Chi Chi as an aging champion, but here’s a peek at the Puerto Rican golfer in his early days on tour:

Early days: SI photo of Juan “Chi Chi” Rodriguez

Puerto Rico’s golf ambassador is especially proud the PGA Tour has come to his homeland. “It’s a dream come true,” he said. “This will be a big step for Puerto Rico.”

Latin American Players in Puerto Rico Open

Following are some of the Latin American players scheduled to play this week at Trump International Golf Course.

Rafael Campos, a San Juan native who plays on the Virginia Commonwealth golf team, will be competing in his third Puerto Rico Open.

Max Alverio, an Albonito native, is a University of Alabama graduate playing in his second Puerto Rico Open.

Erick Morales, a Dorado native, caddied in the two previous Puerto Rico Opens. He qualified to play this year by winning the Chapter Open Qualifier in a playoff.

Julio Animal Santos Polanco, making his first appearance in Puerto Rico, is considered to be the first Dominican-born player to compete on the PGA Tour.

Daniel Barbetti of Argentina, the Venezuela Open champion, will make his first PGA Tour start this week.

Cesar Costilla, also of Argentina and winner of the Visa Open de Argentina, will play in his inaugural PGA Tour event.

Argentine and two-time PGA Tour winner Jose Coceres hopes for a good showing at Trump International in Rio Grande after a series of injuries.

Caddie Steve Williams Says He Didn't Know About Tiger's Affairs
Tiger Woods
WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) -- Tiger Woods' caddie said he knew nothing about the golfer's extramarital affairs and was angry with him over the scandal.

Steve Williams told TV3's "60 Minutes" program Wednesday that he also is bitter at the reaction toward him from the media and members of the public.

"It's been the most difficult time of my life, no two ways about it, because every single person believed that I should know or did know or had something to do with it," Williams said. "I knew nothing, that's my answer. I don't have to clarify or extend that answer, I knew nothing."

The New Zealander, who has been Woods' caddie for 11 years, said he would have spoken up if he had known about the player's behavior.

"If the shoe was on someone else, I would say the same thing. It would be very difficult as a caddie not to know but I'm 100 percent telling you, I did not know, and that's that," he said. "I'm a straight-up sort of person. If I had known something was going on, the whistle would have been blown."

Williams said he was angry when revelations about Woods' private life emerged, but had not berated the player because he felt he needed a friend.

Hunter Mahan Hangs on for Phoenix Win

Filed under:

Hunter Mahan's first words after walking off TPC Scottsdale Sunday afternoon as winner of the Waste Management Phoenix Open were brief but spot on.

"Great players win," Mahan said. "I want to be a great player."

A final-round 65, which included an eagle and two birdies on the back nine, for a 16 under total suggests Mahan understands the concept.

The 27-year-old Californian, who played college golf at Oklahoma State, won his second career PGA Tour title by coming down the stretch like a seasoned pro on the way to a one-shot decision over rookie Rickie Fowler, another Okie State product.

At one point Sunday 19 golfers were within three shots of the lead, but Mahan played the back nine with an eagle at 13 and birdies at 14 and 16. Also, he was the only player in the field to play the final two rounds without a bogey.

Mahan's potential talent has been no secret. Since joining the tour in 2004 he has played on two U.S. Presidents Cup teams and in one Ryder Cup, each time as a captain's pick. Last year he finished 10th in the Masters and sixth at the U.S. Open.

Greetings from the Puerto Rico Open
I AM PLEASED TO be writing from Rio Grande, Puerto Rico, tonight. ARMCHAIR GOLF is attending the 2010 Puerto Rico Open this week as the guest of the Puerto Rico Tourism Company. Played opposite of the WGC-CA Championship at Doral, this is the third year the PGA Tour has teed it up in Puerto Rico. Michael Bradley is the defending champion.

The tournament venue is the Trump International Golf Course, a Tom Kite design (Tom will be here). The championship course is a part of the vast Gran Melia Resort, my accommodations for the week. I must say, this is the perfect respite after such a long, cold, icy winter.

So check back for PGA Tour golf from near old San Juan, served up fresh and hopefully tasty. Lastly, congratulations to Camilo Villegas for his win at the Honda Classic.

This Week: WGC CA Championship
Tiger Woods won't be at the WGC CA Championship this week, and neither will Ryo Ishikawa. Tiger's absence is no suprise at all, but now that he's practicing again we can expect to see stories every Friday afternoon - the deadline to commit to the following week's event - noting when Woods fails to join the field.

But keep in that mind that the CA Championship will be only the third PGA Tour event that Woods has missed during his, ahem, hiatus. To this point in the season, Woods would only have played the Farmers Insurance Open (Torrey Pines) and the WGC Match Play Championship in one of his "normal" years.

Ishikawa has a much better reason than Woods for missing the CA Championship: He's attending his high school graduation. Today, in fact. The 18-year-old is in Tokyo with his fellow students getting his diploma. Good for him.

Anyone think Camilo Villegas isn't the favorite this week? In three tournaments in 2010, he's finished third, eighth and first. The defending champion is Phil Mickelson. Remember him?

Check the WGC CA Championship tournament page for the list of past champions and more tourney info and trivia.

This Week: WGC CA Championship originally appeared on About.com Golf on Monday, March 8th, 2010 at 11:27:00.

Reports Say Tiger's Rehab Over
Tiger WoodsJACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Tiger Woods is back at home after a week of family counseling in Arizona and is trying to get into a routine that includes golf and fitness, a person with knowledge of his schedule said Tuesday.

Woods returned to his home near Orlando on Saturday and has been hitting balls on the range at Isleworth, not far from where he ran his SUV into a tree in a middle-of-the-night accident on Nov. 27 that set off revelations of his extramarital affairs.

The person, who spoke on condition of anonymity because only Woods is authorized to release information about his schedule, said there is still no timetable for golf's No. 1 player to return to competition.

Woods was photographed hitting golf balls at Isleworth on Feb. 18, the day before he ended nearly three months of silence by speaking to a small group of associates in a 13½-minute statement that was televised around the world. Those photos of Woods were arranged to counter the paparazzi trying to follow his every move since Thanksgiving.

Woods has not practiced in earnest since winning the Australian Masters in Melbourne on Nov. 15 for his 82nd victory worldwide.

News of him getting back into a routine is sure to begin speculation when he might return to the PGA Tour. Woods announced on Dec. 4 that he was taking an "indefinite break" to try to salvage his marriage.

Clown Suit Fits Dismal Daly to Tee

Filed under:

John Daly
The harassing calls on Garry Smits' phone approached 100 by mid-day Wednesday. Only one of them threatened to harm his family.

Congratulations, John Daly. Your people have spoken, and the PGA Tour has Page No. 457 for your bad-boy dossier.

Daly instructed his Twitter followers to blast Smits, a sportswriter for the Florida Times-Union. That after Smits wrote a story Tuesday detailing the Tour's 456-page disciplinary file on Daly.

The only thing more predictable than a scoundrel blaming the media is for the media to lash back. I hesitate to do that because this whole thing smells like a P.T. Barnum ploy.

There's a sucker born every minute, the circus king famously said. Since Daly can no longer make a living being a golfer, he has to do it being John Daly.

That means acting like a clown and marketing it to his gullible fans. They no doubt loved Tuesday night's Golf Channel premiere of Being John Daly. What better way to pump next week's episode:

JD gets drunk and hits a tee shot into the media tent at The Honda Classic!

Square-Grooved Wedges Banned After Ping Drops Challenge

Ping Eye2 WedgeThe PGA Tour's groove war is over.

The pre-1990 Ping Eye2 wedges that were non-conforming but not illegal on the PGA Tour because of a legal loophole, will no longer be allowed, beginning March 29.

Ping chairman and CEO John Solheim announced Monday that Ping will waive its rights to a settlement that had kept the PGA Tour from banning the deeper, wider grooves that no longer meet USGA regulations.

"John Solheim and Ping had a terrific opportunity to do something very positive and significant for the game of golf and we very much appreciate his willingness to take this action," PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem said.

A firestorm of controversy was ignited early this season when Phil Mickelson, one of a handful of players to use the old clubs, was branded a cheater by Scott McCarron.

Mickelson, however, was not the only one to take advantage of the loophole. Others included Fred Couples, Hunter Mahan and John Daly.

"It levels the playing field on the PGA Tour and resolves a very unfortunate situation that we predicted would happen when the USGA first proposed the new groove rule more than two years ago," Solheim said.
